Live simply, save the rest, hit the road...
I have never won the lottery (not more than $50 at least).
I worked hard for 12 years, lived modestly, spent frugally, and saved the rest.
I invested savings into interest earning instruments (not so easy these days).
I aim to minimise my expenditures and maximize my returns.
I eat locally, I wear multi-functional clothes, never buy bottled water or soft drinks, and make my own cappuccinos.
I very rarely drink alcohol as it is usually an expensive (and unnecessary) activity.
With warm weather, my tent, alcohol stove and a bicycle I can travel any country on Earth for under $15/day.
Get me to Asia and I can easily cut that number to under $10/day (maybe $5).
So many cultural activities are free: cathedrals, monasteries, festivals, art exhibits, museums, local music, etc.

So how is it possible....
I have never won the lottery yet I have been on the road for 8 years. See how.
I have no debt. (The only debt I've ever had more than 30 days is a mortgage)
My only fixed costs are travel insurance and taxes.
I get around only using public transportation, my thumb, walking, or riding my bicycle.
Free credit cards get me miles which pay for the occasional long-haul flight.
I spend less than 1% of my annual expenditures on fees.
My monthly phone and internet cost is less than $10/month.
In the past 3 years I have paid for less than 10 nights of accommodation for myself.
