Using Miles For Long-Haul Flights
If you use a credit card for some aspects of your travel make sure you pay it off monthly, and also make sure you receive miles for your purchases. I find airline miles to be the most useful and cost effective (vs hotel miles or cash back). Long-haul flights between continents (especially across the large Pacific Ocean) can cost $1200+ one way if you pay cash. Why not use free miles for the occasional long-haul?
FREE TICKET ALMOST ANYWHERE ON EARTH. HOW?
Sign up for an introductory offer which gets you 40,000-50,000 free miles after you spend a certain amount (usually $2500-3000 in the first 3 months). Charge your outgoing flights, travel insurance, incidentals to this card and after you meet the minimum spend enjoy a free flight almost anywhere on Earth. That will get you enough miles for a free Round Trip from the US to Europe (40-50,000), from Europe to Asia or almost anywhere in between! I recently flew myself and my bike (cost $100 extra) for 40,000 free miles from a promotion (plus $18 in taxes) from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand.
